Colocho (How to deal with curls in Guatemala)

En muchos países, el termino “rizado” se utiliza para describir el cabello de una persona, en Guatemala, nosotros decimos “colocho”.  Colocho sustituye la palabra rizo/rizado y muchas veces “pelo” sustituye la palabra cabello.  De tal forma:

Se cortó un rizo =  Se cortó un colocho

Tiene el cabello rizado = Tiene el pelo colocho.

No crean que la palabra se queda nada más en una definición del estado del cabello, va un poco más allá.  Cuando de forma coloquial queremos llamar la atención de alguien, que no conocemos, pero hacerlo en un tono cordial decimos:

“¡Mira, colocho!”

Cuando alguien no quiere entrar en específicos, nos indica:

“El colocho de camisa azul se lo va a arreglar.”

Un colocho es también la forma en que definimos algo pasó de estar en una posición a estar en otra posición enrroscada, doblada o hasta deformada.

“Con el calor se hizo un colocho”.

“El nene se hizo un colocho y finalmente se durmió.”

In many countries, the term “rizado” (curled)  is used to describe a person’s hair, in Guatemala, we say “colocho”.  The word replaces the word curl and curly.  While we’re on that subject, you will find the word “pelo” replaces the word “cabello” when describing hair.  So:

He cut a curly lock  (would be) = Se cortó un colocho

Has curly curly hair (would be)  = El tiene el pelo colocho.

Do not think that the word is just a definition of the condition of the hair, it goes a step further. When we colloquially call someone’s attention, especially someone we do not know well or at all,  but want to do so in a cordial tone we say:

“¡Mirá, colocho!”

When someone does not want to get into specifics, he might indicate:

“The colocho (guy) in the blue shirt is going to fix it for you.”

A colocho  is also how we define something that was in a position and changed into a different one where it becomes  entertwined, bent or even distorted.

“El calor lo volvió un colocho”.  (The heat had it becoming a curl)

“El nene se hizo un colocho y finalmente se durmió. (The baby  ”curled up”  and finally fell asleep.”
